Free Photo Editing Programs

Having the best software or program available in the internet is not that easy. True, there are long lists to choose from but you have to pay for a hundred or so bucks which, to many users, cannot afford. Thanks, there are at least free programs available that we can right away download or use it online.

Here, I have collected some of the best and most popular programs in photo editing. I’ve gone to reviews each of these programs, their pros and cons included. Rating these programs may vary according to one’s priorities and usability. Professionals may still opt for Photoshop but others may prefer GIMP or other easier-to-learn programs. The latter is by no means an easy program to learn also like the former. You have to go through painstaking process to get the hang of it. Well, just take a look for yourself what is most suitable for you.

1. GIMP. This is regarded as the alternative to Photoshop and it’s free! They do have almost similar features with Photoshop but the latter is more stable. I tried them both and I daresay overwhelming for beginners. You’ve 3 boxes filled full of tools and icons popping-up once you opened it before your eyes, and most likely, you’ll be thinking twice if you pursue to learn or not. But with perseverance, I bet, you’ll earn what you want and indeed rewarding.

Other than mere tutorials, you’ll find out that there are also updates and valuable information on GIMP. And there are links for free downloads and references too!

3. Paint.Net. This is equally on top of the line free photo editing program on my list. Why? Like Photoscape, it’s much easier to learn though not as feature-packed as the first two programs mentioned here. It’s something like an improved MS Paint. So, for those who are familiar already with MS Paint, this one will most likely a hassle-free, easy-to-use for you.

9. Seashore.

Seashore is an open source image editor for Mac OS X’s Cocoa framework. It features gradients, textures and anti-aliasing for both text and brush strokes. It supports multiple layers and alpha channel editing. It is based around the GIMP’s technology and uses the same native file format.
However, unlike the GIMP, Seashore aims to serve the basic image editing needs of most computer users, not to provide a replacement for professional image editing products. Also, unlike GIMP, Seashore has an all-new Cocoa UI that will fit right in on Mac OS X.
Seashore was created by Mark Pazolli who led the project until the end of 2009.

10. Krita. Krita is a painting and image editing application for KOffice. Krita is part of KOffice since version 1.4. Krita contains both ease-of-use and fun features like guided painting (never before has it been so easy to airbrush a straight line!) and high-end features like support for 16 bit images, CMYK, L*a*b and even OpenEXR HDR images.

Says one user which I agree partially, “Krita is geared more toward artists rather than photographers, and has a toolset which reflects that. While a number of photography-specific tools are missing, Krita can still be a very powerful photo editor when supplemented by another program to handle the basic raw conversion and curve editing. The fact that Krita supports deep color gives it a big advantage over GIMP, at least until the next full version release of GIMP.”
